Hidden deep within "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes, the theme of eternal love can be seen over and
over again, however, it is most prevalent through the symbolic nature of Bess' hair. Early in the poem,
Bess is described as “Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair." A love knot can be described
similarly as an infinity symbol, representing something that is eternal and never ending. Noyes uses this
to represent the eternal nature of the love shared between the Highwayman and Bess. The author slyly
shows his audience that, even after death, the love between our protagonist is still alive. In the final line of
the poem, after the tragic death of the Highwayman and Bess, Bess can still be seen "Plaiting a dark red
love-knot into her long black hair.” Even in death, their eternal love is evident.
