After Johnny´s death, Dally feels guilty and wants to die. He

purposely points an unloaded gun at the police, forcing them to shoot him so he can die.

Explanation:

Dally feels guilty for Johnny´s death because of his relationship with the gang. So he calls the gang members claiming he needs help because he has robbed a grocery store and asks them to meet him at a vacant lot. Dally, the gang, and the police get to the lot at the same time. Dally points an unloaded gun at the police, but the only one who knows the gun isn´t loaded is Pony, the police don't know that. Dally wants to die, and being gunned down by the police is his way to achieve that goal.
