Stream of consciousness is a literacy technique of writing that intends to capture th natural flow of a character's thought process without any form of structure or format.

In the excerpt the reader can get inside the character's mind and its thoughts, that jump from one thing to the next one and that are in some way incomplete. The character began thinking about how he can see nothing behind the child's eye and that is a reminiscent of eyes in the streets that somehow ends up in a memory of an old crab that the character once held.
