The hero of a tragedy is the main character of the play who gains the admiration and love of the audience because of his heroic traits, but who possesses a character flaw which would result in his fall.

Aristotle, who was a Greek philosopher was the first to describe a tragic hero. He explained that the tragic hero must be a noble man sticking faithfully to the norms of the then Greek society. This attribute endears him to the audience. However, the tragic flaw, which highlights his imperfection would eventually result in his downfall.
