In the late 1800s, a politician named Ignatius Donnelly wrote a book entitled Atlantis, the Antediluvian World. According to him, it could be found west of the Strait of Gibraltar, in the Azores Islands. He believed these islands were actually the peaks of the mountains described by Plato and the myth.
