(4) In the novel, Yossarian is constantly forced to fight more and more missions before he can go home. (5) Yossarian tries a variety of methods to get out of having to fly his missions. (6) He has himself committed to the medical ward, moves the line on a strategic map, and tries to get the medic for his squadron to declare him to be insane. (7) It is believed by Yossarian that everyone is trying to kill him. (8) He points out that “strangers he didn’t know shot at him with cannons every time he flew up into the air to drop bombs on them” as evidence of this fact.
