"Appearance vs. Reality" is shown all throughout the Maycomb county. For example, Tom Robinson is seen by society not as an individual person, but as a black man.  They saw Tom Robinson as a disrespectful, filthy, and unlawful person, because of the rest of the black population. They took the color of his skin and used that against him during the trial. Another is Boo Radley. This is a major one, because we don't see him often within the book. People thought that he was a scary man. In reality, he was a thoughtful, kind and heroic man. They misjudge him because he spends most of his time inside to avoid the unfairness and cruelty of the world outside. When Boo Radley saves Jem and Scout, Scout sees him as a completely different person and learns more about him. She isn't scared of him anymore and starts to appreciate him more. The Maycomb Society takes the appearance of one person and misinterprets it from reality.
