Siegfried Sasson’s “Dreamers” tells the story of a solider’s life, filled with rat infested dug outs and trenches “lashed with rain”, but also filled with the troops’ dreams of coming home to their families. The soldiers walk on “death’s grey land” as they risk their lives every minute during the war but they are also dreamers and when the gunfire starts, they think of “firelit homes, clean beds and wives”. This contrast between the reality of fighting and hope for a peaceful life, shows how people deal with the effects of war by thinking of the future, which makes the current horrors possible to deal with.
