The Lewis' being a middle-income family with dreams of retiring to a more affluent lifestyle was a critical factor in the equation.

However, the main action of the story was ignited when Mr. Steward visited the Lewis home.

The way his offer was packaged was very difficult to resist. It was psychologically designed to arouse curiosity, easily execute, with a huge promise or offer at the end of the exercise that tugged at the possibility of attaining their long term goals.

The question is incomplete, but i'm fairly certain that it is about the Lewis' family story where it is narrated that the family are neither affluent or poor, but able to afford the necessities of life. They however had plans of having more money and becoming rich.

The events that set the main action of the story in motion is when Mr Steward visits the home of the Lewises and makes an offer to them that they cannot resist, which would give them the kind of life they have always dreamt of.
