What's Great and Not-So-Great about the Great Lakes

The Great Lakes are a group of five huge lakes found in the U. S. and Canada. Together, they cover more than 94,000 square miles. If you stood on the Moon, you could see the lakes. That's how big they are!
The largest of these lakes is Lake Superior. It is also the largest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Superior is 350 miles long and 160 miles wide. Fog and rough water cause dangerous conditions for ships. Many of the lake's nearby towns are mining areas.
Lake Huron is the second largest of the Great Lakes and is the world's third largest freshwater lake. It is 206 miles long and 183 miles wide. Violent storms often occur over this lake, and navigation can be hard in certain areas during the winter months due to ice. The water in this lake is fairly clean with little pollution. Fishing is an important industry.
Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes. It is 193 miles long and 53 miles wide. Fishing is important here, but pollution has been a problem in this lake. Rumors of a large sea monster living in Lake Ontario have been reported over the years. It is not known if such a creature actually lives in the lake.
Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that is not in Canada. It is surrounded by the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Lake Michigan is just a little smaller than the state of West Virginia. There are about 12 million people who live along Lake Michigan's shores and enjoy its beaches.
Lake Erie is the fourth largest of the Great Lakes. It gets its name from the Erie tribe of Native Americans who once lived along its southern shores. The lake is 241 miles long and 57 miles wide. Waste from the city of Detroit has been dumped into the lake over the years, causing the lake to emit a foul stench.
The Great Lakes are losing 2.5 billion gallons of water every day. Groups such as We Can Save The Great Lakes are trying to bring awareness to the public and are taking action to help save water loss throughout the lakes. In 2008, the U. S. states of Ohio, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota joined forces with Ontario, a province in Canada, to save the Great Lakes. Their alliance is known as the Great Lakes Compact. The compact tells how the water supply among the five lakes should be managed.

Read this excerpt from "the light of gandhi's lamp" by hilary kromberg inglis, in which she describes driving to the police station where her sister is being detained. to avoid looking at the blackened windows at the top of the building and thinking about the history of who had died or been tortured there, i always looked instead at the little chinese restaurant on the opposite side of the road. how does this passage affect the text? it conveys, with great subtlety, the conflict she felt over having a sister who would break the law and end up in the custody of the police. it conveys, without any implied moral judgment, that those who fought against apartheid considered themselves to be soldiers in a just war. it conveys, with an extended metaphor, the idea that being detained by the police in this society was regarded as a badge of honor. it conveys, with direct language, the view held by many anti-apartheid activists that the police often acted in brutal and unlawful ways.
