Below is a chart on Emergency Procedures. What sort of tone would you use if you were to read this passage to your classmates? Why would you use that tone? Have you ever had to use the procedures?
First Aid and Emergency Procedures
Should someone be taken to the hospital? Check to see if that person…
· has difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
· has had a change in mental status, such as suddenly becoming unusually sleepy or difficult to arouse, disoriented, confused, unconscious, not making sense
· has a cut or break in the skin that is bleeding and won't stop, even when pressure is applied and the wound is elevated above the heart
· has a stiff neck along with a fever
· has a rapid heartbeat that doesn't slow down or has chest pain with a history of heart disease
· has accidentally ingested a poisonous substance or too much medication
· has severe bleeding or head trauma
· has blurred vision
· has broken bones
· has hand wounds with numbness or an inability to move fingers
If someone appears to need medical help, keep them calm and cover them with a blanket to avoid shock. If they have been injured, don’t move them unless they are not safe where they are sitting or lying (such as in the middle of the street). Attempt to stop bleeding by applying a clean cloth to the area, raising the wound above the heart, and applying steady pressure. Call 9-1-1 in case of a true emergency.
