Carlos
(1) My lab partner, Carlos consistently earns the highest grades in our class. (2) No question ever stumps him. (3) In fact, sometimes he seems to know as much as if not more than, our teacher!
(4) The other day I bumped into Carlos at the library. (5) It was not unusual for him to be there. (6) I was surprised to see what he was reading.
(7) "What book is that?" I asked him.
(8) "It's The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway," he said.
(9) "We weren't assigned that book," I said.
(10) " I know," Carlos said. " But this is a book I've always wanted to read."
(11) I talked with Carlos. (12) I started to understand why he was such a strong student (13) He told me that, at any given time, he might be reading a book about botany, space travel, philosophy, or American History. (14) Some kids think he's a snob.
(15) "The more you know about a subject, the more that subject comes alive," he said.
(16) That day, I promised myself to spend more time reading like Carlos. (17) Me and Carlos might even go to the library together sometime. (18) I don't know if I'll ever become as good a student as him, but if I can find more enjoyment in my studies, it will be time well spent.
