A possible reason that explains why Mrs. Hutchinson doesn't argue about whether or not the lottery is fair until her husband is picked is that she never believed or thought that the lottery could fall on her family.

I do not agree with Mrs.Hutchinson because it would not have been fair if the lottery had fallen on any other family.

In "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, the story starts off innocently and the reader assumes that the lottery was something fun. Later in the story, we learn that if the lottery fell on a family, a family member will pay with his life. It was all fun for Mrs. Hutchinson until it fell on her family. The lottery was not fair and would not have been okay if it fell on any other family in the gathering.

Explanation:

Shirley Jackson's "the Lottery" is a story about a bizarre ritual that takes place every year in a small community. The winner of the lottery dies, and although the the villagers are aware of this terrible fortune that awaits the person who wins, they nevertheless participate in the lottery. They are afraid to end the lottery, simply because it has been taking place in their community for decades. They believe that something bad will happen if they put a stop to it - that they will somehow be cursed. They fail to realize what a tragic effect it has on families that lose their members, until they are found in that situation.

Mrs. Hutchinson does not complain until her husband is selected as a winner. She should have refused to participate in the lottery a long time ago, together with the rest of the community. Until the lottery directly influences their lives, the villagers consider it fair.
