Dee means that the world is so big they don't have to stay "stuck" in one place. That the world is a big place to be explored and understood and become better than their station. However, they don't feel stuck, they just enjoy the simpler things in life and Dee can't see nor appreciate it. The author is asking if anyone has the right to judge others on their enduring lifestyle of overcoming slaver, civil war, revolutionary progress to maintain their steadfast living. The new day would have them sacrifice their way of life. From how they live their daily lives to who they see. It's too much to ask of them as it is an obligation they don't believe in which infringes on their freedom to be content with what they have. The new day would have them sacrifice their character as they don't want that for themselves and essentially turn the tables on her saying it is a new day for them by standing up to her and not giving her what she wants.
