S. respondents called immigrants a "good influence"; the opposing view prevailed in France and Great Britain, where tensions between immigrant and non-immigrant populations have been rising. In the U. S. as in Europe, some politicians have sought to capitalize on anti-immigrant sentiment. Especially in states such as California with large immigrant populations, however, candidates must also be mindful of immigrant communities' growing political clout.
