Irony is a figure of speech which contradicts what is expected and what actually happens.

Situational irony is when the result of a situation is different from what you would expect. It is commonly used in sitcoms - for example, a man bought a cake to show how much he loved his wife but it turned out that she hated the sort of cake that he brought to celebrate.
