My family is the ocean around us.
My father is the hurricane, knocking anything and everybody out of his path.
My mother is the sunshine after the storm,
clearing and calming everything else.
my oldest brother is the sand, Kicked and blown away by my dad, but warmed with care by my mom.
My oldest sister is the breeze in the wind, cool, quiet, and there when you need her.
My other two brothers are stingrays, dangerous, but also willing to fight anyone who comes along.
And I, I am an old ship at the bottom of the sea, Lost, abandoned, but full of memories.

1. What is this poem about?

This poem talks about family and family members. The author describes each of his family members: his father, his mother, his older brother and sister, and two younger brothers and him on a very specific way, so we could say that the theme of the poem is the description of a family and each of its members.

In this poem, the speaker is one of the family members. We can conclude that by the use of the personal pronoun "my" before mentioning each family member. He also mentions each of the family members and describes their personality with a lot of details. Therefore, we can conclude he knows them very well, as he belongs there.

Therefore, we can conclude his father is like a hurricane,  stubborn, fierce and strong, his mother is like the sunshine after a storm, calm and gentle, his older brother is like the sand, easily blown away by his father, his older sister is the breeze in the wind, that is cool, quiet and always there for everyone, while his other two brothers are like stingrays, dangerous and willing to fight in order to protect the family.

Those images convey the ideas that everyone in the family has its role, and, although we are all different, we should have the same goal - to cherish and protect our family, despite our differences and characters. The author tries to represent his vision of one family, where everyone is different, with particular personalities and tempers, but they are always there for each other.

The poem's sound and structure affect meaning in different ways. This poem consists of metaphors (descriptions of each family member), in order to create a strong sense of structure and improves the flow of the poem. This poem consists of 16 lines, and it's divided into seven verses. It's written in verse, although the verses don't rhyme. The tone of the poem is even, little nostalgic and gentle, but in the last verse, it culminates and becomes sad and lonely.
