What does the majority of the beginning of the chapter talk about? Why do you think it begins talking about this concept?

Look at the beginning of each little section within the chapter. How is it signaled? What special things are done to the words?

When Moishe the Beadle comes back what story does he tell? Why do you believe that people do not believe him (pp. 6-7)?

Throughout chapter one, readers see our characters and the Jewish population demonstrate doubt as to what reality is. Find 2 quotations that show their doubt.

What are the Jews first impressions of the Germans (pp. 9-10)? When does this change?
