Javier hustled down Rainier Avenue, his face plastered with an irrepressible grin. The long-awaited day had finally come: his band, The Glue Sticks, was scheduled to perform their very first gig at a local rock venue. Javier expected a big crowd. He'd told virtually everyone he knew about the show.
On the way to the club, Javier passed a sports bar. Normally, it was empty, but today there was a line outside the door. The place across the street, too, had an unusually large crowd. Hearing a commotion, Javier peered into the semi-dark interior and saw a crowd of people, huddled around a television. Suddenly, a loud shout came from the bar: "Goal!"
Not being a soccer fan, Javier continued on. When he reached the rock club, his band mates were already there, eagerly awaiting him.
"C'mon!" Sam, the bassist, said. "We've only got five minutes to do a sound check!"
Javier jumped on stage and quickly rehearsed a few songs with his band mates. The bright stage lights were in his eyes, but he could see enough to know that none of his friends had shown up yet. Where is everyone? he wondered.
When it came time to play, the dance floor was still bare. Sam's girlfriend was the only person there. Javier asked her why none of their other friends had shown up.
She shrugged. "There must have been something going on," she said.
"I can't believe it," Sam said. "As far as I knew, this was the only thing going on all night."
It was a disappointment, but the band members later agreed that it might have been for the best. It turned out that The Glue Sticks were desperately in need of practice.
