well, since Captain Nemo is the main character in the novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, I will answer about him.  Everything that Nemo says and does is extremely "unpredictable".  His character is very controversial just as his views are. He is a pessimist that feels he can slay several others, but be overtly vindicated by his own mind's sense of "righteousness".

His attitude affected the novel as it was the driving force behind all of his actions.  This great sense of bitterness for mankind drives his every move within the novel.  He sails around the world "sinking" ships. this leads to the other truly significant character, Professor Aronnax. Being a marine biologist from France embarks on a quest to find a giant narwhal that the US Navy believes is the reason for the ships' destruction. After coming under attack from the elusive Nemo himself, Arronax and two others are "rescued" by the aforementioned pessimist and taken on a voyage of epic proportions.  The attitude portrayed by the professor is one of awe with regards to the underseas adventure, while also contemplating his escape.  He character is torn between his sense of freedom and his love of marine biology.  This contrast in character depths completely brings about the makings of the entire novel.
