Many of the officials thought that one of the planes, reassembled, was the best answer. But it had an open cockpit, and its pilot had never flown at night or in January's subzero temperatures. If the plane iced up or crashed, both the pilot and the serum could be lost. On the other hand, it normally took almost a month to complete a dogsled journey from Nenana to Nome.
