The great gatsby
Fitzgerald, inspired by the parties he had attended during his visits to the north coast of Long Island, began to plan the novel in 1923, with the desire to produce, in his words, "something new, extraordinary, beautiful, simple, but with an intricate design. "[3] Fitzgerald's progress was slow, upon completing his first project after a move to the French Riviera in 1924. Its editor, Maxwell Perkins, felt that the book was vague and convinced the author of Check it over next winter. Fitzgerald was ambivalent on several occasions about the title of the book and considered a variety of alternatives, including titles that referred to the Roman character Trimalción; The title that was documented for the last time I wanted plasmas was Under the Red, White, and Blue.
First published by Scribner's in April 1925, the great Gatsby received mixed reviews and its sale was bad; In its first year, the book sold only 20,000 copies. Fitzgerald died in 1940, believing himself a failure and thinking that his work was forgotten. However, the novel experienced a revival during World War II, became a part of the American high school curriculum and had numerous theater and film adaptations in the following decades. Today, The Great Gatsby is widely regarded as a literature classic and a contender with the title of "Great American Novel." In 1998, the Modern Library editorial board voted it the best North American novel of the 20th century and the second best English-language novel of the same period. [4]
