project: research essay and multimedia presentation on the brain
make a rough draft too
when you read things that makes you think, sometimes it brings up questions that can’t be answered by the actual story or connected pieces. in some pieces of writing the focus is literally on how you learn things or how you process facts. in other pieces, it has more to do with the psychological component of how your brain works. the way to find the answers to how your brain works is through a research paper.
before you write
examine the prompt
before you begin to think about the details you will include, look closely at the prompt to determine exactly what you’re being asked to do. in this case, your driving focus is how the brain works. you can think about this in a physical way or in a psychological way. that part is up to you. you will have to develop a specific question to answer first. the question you are answering might be: how does the brain allow people to see? how do people remember things? what makes people feel sad? what makes people feel happy?
begin reading
in order to be a great writer, you have to be a great reader. think about how much time athletes spend studying the game. this them to physically play better. it’s the same idea in reading. you will need to conduct research using credible sources. to begin your research, you must first identify a research question you’d like to try to answer. research conducted using more specific terms will give you much better information.
if you were going to look a psychological idea, for example, you might search for psychological impact on brains. experiment with using different types of words that mean the same thing. they often turn up different information in your search.
make sure that the place you are getting your information from is a valid site. there are lots of people who write and publish online. just because a piece is online doesn’t mean it is true. you’ll notice that all of the sample sites are educational sites. another great place to get credible articles is google scholar. also, if you have access to databases through your school or public library, they are an excellent source to locate articles.
craft a thesis
after you have a clear understanding of your task, you are ready to formulate a thesis. a thesis is the central idea of your essay. it is one sentence that makes a clear statement about your position, and what you are going to write about. make sure your thesis directly addresses the prompt by answering the question or task you have been assigned.
write with your audience and purpose in mind
every writer must consider the reason for their writing and the audience they will be writing for. as you plan your essay, think about the purpose of your essay. you should assume that your audience will be at the least, your teacher and your peers, but you might want to address it to parents of adolescents, or people who play sports as well.
