two weeks later jeb ran all the way home from school. he was out of breath by the time he reached the kitchen, but grinned as he handed his mother an open tin of peas. “my lands, what on earth do you have here? ” she asked.
jeb’s grin grew even bigger as he explained, “seth’s pa got a job as an inspector at the cannery! one of his tasks is to open a can each day to assure good quality, but the company can’t use the cans he inspects. they told him he could take those open cans home, and he wanted you to have the first one.”
