Passage (margaret knight, inventor)
margaret knight was born in 1838. margaret began thinking of inventions at a very young age. she started out making sleds and kites for her brothers while growing up in maine. when she was just 12 years old, she had an idea for a device that could be used in factories to shut down machinery, preventing workers from being injured.

margaret knight was an employee in a paper bag factory when she invented a new machine to automatically fold and glue paper bags. the machine she invented creates the square bottoms for paper bags. paper bags had been more like envelopes before and they fell apart much easier. her invention made paper bags much more durable. margaret knight can be considered the mother of the grocery bag. she founded the eastern paper bag company in 1870.

margaret knight is considered one of "the female edisons," and she received some 26 patents. patents are grants from the government that give an inventor the sole right to make, use, and sell an invention. it ensures that someone can't steal an original idea and profit without paying the inventor. margaret knight's machine-made, flat-bottomed paper bags are still in use to this very day!
