In Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca's "La Relacion," we learn about many Native American tribes that he encountered while travelling for eight long years along the southwest coast of US. He along with many men had set out on an expedition well-known as the Narváez expedition to colonize the territory of North and East of Mexico. But on their way, they faced a hurricane where 200 of his men drowned. After struggling with the hurricane, they landed on Tampa Bay but set out looking for Spanish settlements when they ran out of food. They arrived at Galveston Island which was inhabited by the Indian tribe Karankawas. The tribe members treated them well and gave each of them an arrow and food. But Cabeza de Vaca and his men tried to leave the island when a large wave crashed into them, drowning some of the men and making all others lose their clothes. Seeing this the Native American tribe was terrified and started weeping for them.
