By using a literary device called characterization, a writer describes the personality or physical appearance of a particular character.

In the excerpt from the Pardoner's Tale, Chaucer characterizes the young man as deceitful, because of his plan to split all the gold between him and one of his friends, and, in that way, betray the third friend.  The third friend has gone away, so this is a perfect opportunity for a young man to plot behind his back.
