(compare real bird's poetry with definitions of "beat poetry".)

beat poetry:
- beat poetry began to sprout in the late 1940s and blossomed in the 1950s primarily in new york and san francisco. influenced by the rhythmic styling of bebop jazz, beat poetry is characterized by its intentional defiance of the literary forms and standard narrative values of previous generations.
-free verse: little words, big ideas free verse allows for poets to better get down with the rhythms of their own bad hearts, rather than sounding more like stuff that's been written before-like all those english sonnets, which are the lit tradition's version of the hit pop song formula
-beat poetry often contains informal phrasing and diction and formless verse that attempts to
capture spontaneity of thought and feeling.
-beat poets began to use their art as a means of questioning societal norms, challenging
materialism, exploring various types of spirituality all in a question to defy and expand self-awareness and explore limitless creativity.

What can you infer about how the particular events in "the memoirs of the conquistador bernal del diaz de castillo" still affected the writer at the time of writing his memoir? he thinks of his dead crewmen with sadness and regrets that they died for nothing. he is still frustrated that one of his men accidentally kills himself by drinking too much water.  he thinks wistfully about the wealth he may have enjoyed if they had found gold in the yucatan.  he still considers indians liars.
