Whenever i’m greeted by such incomprehensible colloquialisms, i say to myself, “you should’ve become a doctor like your father.” but then i remember listening to my father talk shop on the phone when i was a child. i couldn’t understand him than any better than i understand my students today. i tried to keep up with the conversation as best i could, but when i heard phrases like myocardial infarction and fibromyalgia i just knew i couldn’t hack it as a physician. stat, taxoplasmosis, ventricular fibrillation: not exactly music to a young boy’s ears. by the time i was in high school i was reading poetry on my own free time just to counteract the damage done by my father’s medspeak. even a grocery list sounds poetic after listening to thrombosis and neonatal sepsis that.
