Most people think dragons are the stuff of fantasy stories and fairy tales. (2) did you know that a few small islands in indonesia are home to a giant lizard called the komodo dragon? (3) komodo dragons are the most largest living lizards in the world. (4) they grow up to ten feet in length and can weigh up to 300 pounds or more.

(5) although most lizards eat both plants and animals, komodo dragons eat only meat. (6) for the most part they consume animals that are already dead. (7) they still hunt and kill live prey, however, including deer, wild pigs, birds, and even their own young. (8) to catch live prey, these huge lizards use their keen sense of smell and sprint at speeds of up to 11 miles per hour. (9) you don’t want to get bitten by a komodo dragon unless they have teeth like razors and ooze a deadly poison from between their teeth. (10) even if an animal that has been bitten by a komodo dragon manages to escape, it will soon die from the lizard’s poisonous bite.

(11) komodo dragons have many interesting traits. (12) for example, they can climb trees and swim. (13) they hunt in the daytime, usually in the afternoon when it is cooler. (14) with their sharp claws, they dig deep burrows in which to sleep and to lay their eggs. (15) also, komodo dragons can live from 20 to 50 years.

(16) unfortunately, the komodo dragon is endangered. (17) there are only about 3,000 to 5,000 of these lizards in existence. (18) the number of komodo dragons in the wild has steadily decreased for various reasons. (19) their population has been affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes and fires, illegal hunting by poachers, and an increase in tourism to the indonesian islands where they live. (20) all of the komodo dragons in the world, except those in captivity, lived within a few thousand miles. (21) they are found only on five islands, including komodo, rinca, and flores. (22) in 1980, komodo national park was established to protect these unique creatures.

(23) interestingly, there may be a link between komodo dragons and the dragons of myth and legend. (24) not only are komodo dragons huge, meat-eating lizards, but they also have long, forked, yellow tongues. (25) when they stick them out, some people say it looks like they are spitting fire!
