Now that we've come to the end of the first unit, it's time for you to really let your new creative juices flow. again, without worrying too much about the final product, pick a subject you feel passionate enough about to write a creative essay. remember, unlike the usual type of essays you'll write for other subjects, there is no need to create a balanced or logical argument here.
this is simply about expressing your feelings in an eloquent and nonfictional way. if you like, you could brainstorm a few ideas first or do some freewriting on the subject to get yourself started.
assignment instructions: then take everything you've learned about the music of words from translitics, and about how your favorite writers achieve the effects they do, and try to write an essay that really makes an impact on your reader. your essay should be between 600 and 1000 words and not be a repetition of any previous work. submit your completed essay in the creative writing 1.4 assignment dropbox. this assignment is worth 20 points.
once you've done that, you'll be ready to move on to the next unit, where we'll talk more specifically about literary devices and how great writers use them.

What is the effect of narrator's word choice on the tone of this passage? the words "my heart shrank within itself" create a fearful tone. the words "wounded his fellow" develop a remorseful tone. the words "struck harsh upon my ears" suggest an irritated tone. the words "better-omened" set a hopeful tone. excerpt from "the cabuliwallah" by rabindranath tagore i was sitting in my study, looking through the accounts, when some one entered, saluting respectfully, and stood before me. it was rahmun the cabuliwallah. at first i did not recognise him. he had no bag, nor the long hair, nor the same vigour that he used to have. but he smiled, and i knew him again. "when did you come, rahmun? " i asked him. "last evening," he said, "i was released from jail." the words struck harsh upon my ears. i had never before talked with one who had wounded his fellow, and my heart shrank within itself when i realised this; for i felt that the day would have been better-omened had he not turned up.
