Jo’s mother talks to her about liberty and said, in other words, that when you have experimented one kind of liberty you realized that it is not all in life and probably you would be searching for another kind of liberty. She tells that to her daughter because of Jo’s personality; with these words, her mother is trying to convince her to give a chance to the traditional life where a woman has kids and quiet and normal life. She also incorporates in her speech all of her 4 daughters because she knows the way of being of each other and, as all moms do, try to educate them the best she can. At this respect, the mother considers having an own family and house as a “sweeter” life than that where a woman is independent and free. Her way of thinking, of course, is related to the time that she was living and the rights and obligation that a woman should follow in the United States.
