The sentence may long or short but as a long as it has one independent clause then it is a simple sentence.  An example: John took the bus. John is the subject, took is the verb Compound sentence  This is a sentence that has two independent clauses joined together using punctuation marks like semicolon, or coma and a conjunction such as or, and, but, etc. Compound sentences can be broken down into two complete sentences, with each sentence having its own subject and verb. For Example. John waited for the train but,the train was lateCompound-complex sentence It is a sentence that combines two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
