why do clouds turn gray before it rains?

it is thickness, or height of clouds, that makes them look gray. clouds are formed when water vapor condenses within pockets of rising air. under the right conditions, the air continues to rise, causing the cloud do build higher and higher. the tiny water droplets and ice crystals in clouds are jusy the right size to scatter all the colors of light. when light contains all colors, we perceive it as white. when clouds are thin, they let a large portion of the light through and appear white. but like any object that transmits light, the thicker they are, the less light makes it through. as their thickness increases, the bottoms of clouds look darker but still scatter all the colors. we perceive this as gray. if you look carefully, you will notice that the relatively flat bottoms of clouds are always a little grayer than their sides. the taller the clouds become, the grayer their bottoms look.

Read the excerpt from ernest hemingway’s “soldier's home.” his father was in the real estate business and always wanted the car to be at his command when he required it to take clients out into the country to show them a piece of farm property. the car always stood outside the first national bank building where his father had an office on the second floor. now, after the war, it was still the same car. nothing was changed in the town except that the young girls had grown up. how does hemingway’s description of the town as unchanged impact the readers’ perception of krebs? it emphasizes that while the town has remained the same, krebs has changed. it illustrates that krebs despises the town he grew up in because it is boring. it demonstrates that krebs views himself as similar to the other soldiers from his town. it reveals that krebs is jealous of those who were able to stay in town and avoid the war.
