the shadows of the ships
rock on the crest
in the low blue lustre
of the tardy and the *soft inrolling tide.*

a long brown bar at *the dip of the sky*
puts an arm of sand in the span of salt.

the lucid and *endless wrinkles*
draw in, lapse and withdraw.
*wavelets crumble* and white spent bubbles
wash on the floor of the beach.

are the shadows of the ships.

Hyperbole is exaggeration.  As you read the poem, while there may be something that could happen, there is usually an element of is that is grossly exaggerated and could never happen or is a claim that could never happen.  For example, "I am so hungry I could eat a house."  In this particular poem, "A long brown bar at the dip of the sky (where the sand or beach meets the sky) puts an arm of sand in the span of salt is hyperbole.  The beach doesn't really have a an arm in the salt.

1. dolores driscoll - b. first person minor

dolores is a minor character who happens to be driving the bus at the time of the accident. she narrates picking up each of the children and her last memory is the children being thrown around the bus.

2. billy ansel - a. first person major

billy loses his twins in the accident. he tells his own story, how he witnessed the accident and how he tried to the rescuers. he is a major character, as he is at the center of the story.

3. mitchell stephens - c. first person observer

mitchell enters the story after the accident. he is a lawyer who learns about the accident based on other characters observations. though he tells the story from a first person perspective, he is just an observer.
