One of the best examples i the part in which he addresses the critics and that they might state that Americans do not care about Africa, that they are too different from Americans to inspire empathy and that Americans are so self-absorbed that they only want to eat fast food and watch TV. With this excerpt, Ben Affleck uses oversimplification to equate the idea of unhelpfulness with racism. Those Americans who do not help Congolese - either because they do not know the situation there or do not have the economic or political means to do it - are self-absorbed and racist people.

Furthermore, Affleck also exagerates the role of George Washington Williams in the struggle against the Congo Free State, even mentioning the Trials of Nuremberg. While Williams had an important role in making it public, Affleck undermines the voices of Congolese dissidents and the report of the British consul Roger Casament in King Leopold's resignation.
