A pun is a literary device an author employs, typically for humor, where there can be more than one meaning attributed to a word or words.  Or, a pun can also be an instance where similar-sounding words are used in the place of each other to, too, create humor.   Here is an example of a joke using a pun:

How do you get a baby space alien to fall asleep?

You rocket!

Thus, the pun is “rocket” because rocket sounds like “rock it,” and it is funny because when one thinks of space, one thinks of flying saucers and rockets.
