These games started in Ancient Greece as part of religious festivals, first Olympic games were held in the city of Olympia, near a sanctuary. Greeks believed that the whoever was champion of each sport would be closer to the Gods. The price was just a crown of leaves (there were no medals). Only after the games gained a lot of popularity throughout the continet, they brought unity between cities and fame to the athletes.
