During Elies time in all the concentration camps he had been to, he slowly last his faith in God. He feels as if God has left them to suffer or in other words, turned His back on them. His faith in God seemed to burn with the children who were tossed into the flames. "For the first time, I felt anger rising within me. Why should I santify His name? The Almighty, the terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for?"

Elie has two central internal conflicts: one is with God, and the other is with his father. At the beginning of  nigh , Elie is seriously studying the Talmud, putting specific focus on the mysticism of the Jewish faith. Elie's father is not only a devout Jew, he is a person to whom people come for advice.
