I agree that Balwin's essay is about the triumph of the human spirit. It is about staying strong and overcoming life's struggles. However, it is not an optimist or happy text, as it reviews the author's upbringing, while remembering his father's death and a detailed description of the funeral, as well as his feelings and thoughts about everything that was happening in that time.

He talks about their experience as preachers and recalls different events that may evoke negative feelings, such as bitterness or uncertainty. The main point of the essay and the reason it is about the triumph of the human spirit is because in the end, the author realizes that we should accept life (and men) as it is, but without being complacent. According to him, we should fight against injustice with all our strength and be able to have a heart free of hatred and despair.
