Night, by Elie Wiesel, tells the story of his experiences of the Holocaust, from 1944-45, when he was a prisoner at the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buchenwald.

When the main character arrives to Birkenau, he goes through the process of selection. People were divided between those who were able to work and those who were going to the gas chambers. Eliezer and his father join the line of those able to work, but as they are walking, they see something horrific. Eliezer describes two giant pits, one where babies are burning, and the other one where adults are burning. He says that the sight inspired terror among the Jewish prisoners, who started to cry and pray. It also imprinted in his mind the horrors that the Nazi regime was capable of.
