"saving the red apes" here is an excerpt from page 2 of the article. select five sentences that show who or what is to blame for deforestation. "you've probably heard about the destruction of the tropical rainforests. as of 2007, rainforests were down to about only 6 or 7 percent of the world's surface. but they are home to nearly half of the planet's species. some of these species can survive only in these areas. as deforestation continues, these species could become extinct. the loss of forests also affects humans in many ways. indigenous (native) people have long depended on the forest. some are hunter-gatherers. others plant crops. in addition, humans depend on the forests for materials such as timber, rubber, and fruits. and the forests have the potential to give so much more. they are home to plants and animals that are used to make medicines. there might be even more to be discovered. the cure for cancer could be hidden in the rainforests, waiting to be found. with all of these concerns, why is deforestation taking place? there are many reasons. for one, loggers cut down forests. also, land is cleared for agriculture. there are large companies that develop plantations and cattle ranches. there are also small-scale farmers. they depend on agriculture to feed their families."
