In order for us to get a more definite idea of Long Island influence in "The Great Gatsby", we have to start by saying that the novel is set in both New York City and Long Island; two areas known as the "West Egg" and the "East Egg", which are, in real life, Great Neck and Port Washington, home to the rich and fabulous of the New York City area. The author himself actually lived in a house in West Egg.

People who live here are rich, have a lot of free time, and one of their main concerns is how they are perceived socially. They are not interested in politics, religion or even education. ("you need the degree, but you don't need to have learned anything").
