Anna Julia Haywood Cooper was an American author, educator, scholar, sociologist and activist. Born into slavery, she was the fourth African-American woman to earn a PhD. She is also considered the mother of "Black feminism."

An accomplished writer and educator, her work focused on the importance of female education in order to improve the lives of African Americans. She argued that educated women would be able to better support underprivileged communities, and at the same time, contribute to the development of knowledge.
