Find how 1 g of chlorobenzene and 1 g of hexachlorobenzene distribute into an environment at 25 °C containing the following phases (all are present in the system and consider only equilibrium). 1 L of water containing 100 mg/L dissolved organic carbon
1 kg (dry)MM of soil containing 1% organic carbon
1 L of air
a. Consider no NAPL present- Is this possible?
b. Consider 10 mL of an oily aromatic solvent (ρ=0.8g/cm3 , rMW 100 g/mole) in which both chlorobenzene and hexachlorobenzene form an ideal phase. This is in addition to the phases identified above.
Properties of the compounds
Chlorobenzene Hexachlorobenzene
Log Kow =2.64 Log Kow = 5.86
Solubility in water =502 mg/L Solubility in water = 0.006 mg/L
