You are to design a steel driveshaft or halfshaft such as in a front wheel drive vehicle. The worst case shaft loading as estimated from input limits is that it needs to transmit 250hp at 5000rpm. Bending loads and axial loads are negligible because of constant velocity joints and splines at the end of the shaft. Select an appropriate shaft diameter if the material scientist has selected CD SAE 1020 (use ShigleyĆ¢s to find your material allowables). Do not include any additional safety factors assume this is built into the load via a load factor. Required:
a. What is the nominal shear stress (away from splines and any stress concentrations) at the surface of your shaft?
b. Your old boss says try a hollow shaft where the inside diameter is 0.9 times the outside diameter used, what outside diameter would be required to give the same outer-surface stress?
c. How does the weight/length of the solid and hollow shaft compare?

Apump is used to circulate hot water in a home heating system. water enters the well-insulated pump operating at steady state at a rate of 0.42 gal/min. the inlet pressure and temperature are 14.7 lbf/in.2, and 180Ā°f, respectively; at the exit the pressure is 60 lbf/in.2 the pump requires 1/15 hp of power input. water can be modeled as an incompressible substance with constant density of 60.58 lb/ft3 and constant specific heat of 1 btu/lb or. neglecting kinetic and potential energy effects, determine the temperature change, in Ā°r, as the water flows through the pump.
