Residents near the Supreme Waste Incinerator are complaining of lung irritation that may be due to high cadmium concentrations downwind of the smelter. You are an engineer working for the Kansas Department of Health and the Environment and you have been asked to monitor Cadmium concentrations in the air at ground level. The smelter stack emits 25,000 kg/yr of Cadmium and has an effective stack height of 100 m. (a) First you plan to calculate the pollutant concentrations at the home of nearby residents, located 2 km directly downwind of the smelter stack. Normally, the average wind speed is 4.5 m/s at an anemometer located at 10 m and the conditions are clear and sunny with the sun nearly overhead. What is the atmospheric Cadmium concentration at this location? Assume rough terrain.
(b) Next, you will need to report the distance downwind to reach the maximum cadmium concentration and determine that peak downwind concentration under the conditions given in part
(c) Finally, the local atmosphere frequently experiences temperature inversions that start at a height of 300 m. Your report will also need to include the pollutant concentrations at the home of residents living 2 km away during a radiation inversion.
