A compacted fill is to be constructed to support a new highway. The fill material will be taken from a location (“borrow pit”) where the in-place dry unit weight is 105 pcf and the water content is 9%. The soil will be excavated from the borrow pit, moistened to increase the water content to 13.5% and then compacted to a final dry unit weight of 118 pcf. The total final volume of the compacted fill will be 250,000 yd3.
