1. (2 points) Locate the centroid and calculate the moments of inertia, Ix and Iy, for the double W16x40 beam section shown below. Ignore the bolts for purposes of these calculations. (HINT: Use Appendix B for properties of each of the two pieces and assume they are rigidly attached to one another by the bolts. The shapes have fillets and rounds so doing this the “long way” will not work.) Structural steel members come in a variety of shapes, a small selection of which appear in Appendix B of your text. A “W” shape is a wide-flanged shape typically used as a beam or column and resembles an “I” with wider flanges (the horizontal top and bottom) than traditional “I” shapes. In any designation, the letter is the type of shape, the first number is the nominal (or approximate) depth of the beam in inches (as measured from the outsides of the flanges) and the second number is the approximate weight of the shape in lb/ft. Thus, a W6x20 shape looks like a wide “I”, has an approximate depth of 6 inches and a weight of approximately 20 lb/ft. Actual values for the shape, including all heights, widths, and thicknesses, are typically tabulated such as is done in Appendix B. SI beams use the same basic system but would have significantly higher numbers with depth measured in mm and weight in kg/m.
