A self-priming centrifugal pump is used to pump water at 25°C from a reservoir whose surface is 2.2 m below the centerline of the pump inlet. The pipe is PVC pipe with an inner diameter of 24.0 mm and negligible average inner roughness height. The pipe length from the submerged pipe inlet to the pump inlet is 2.8 m. There are only two minor losses in the piping system from the pipe inlet to the pump inlet: a sharp-edged reentrant inlet (KL = 0.85) and a flanged smooth 90° regular elbow (KL = 0.3). The pump’s required net positive suction head is provided by the manufacturer as a curve fit: NPSHrequired = 2.2 m + (0.0013 m/Lpm2)V˙2 where the volume flow rate is in Lpm. The standard atmospheric pressure is Patm = 101.3 kPa. For water at T = 25ºC, rho = 997.0 kg/m3, μ = 8.91 × 10−4 kg/m·s, and Pv = 3.169 kPa. Estimate the maximum volume flow rate (in units of Lpm) that can be pumped without cavitation. Solve this problem using appropriate software.

Amass of m 1.5 kg of steam is contained in a closed rigid container. initially the pressure and temperature of the steam are: p 1.5 mpa and t 240°c (superheated state), respectively. then the temperature drops to t2= 100°c as the result of heat transfer to the surroundings. determine: a) quality of the steam at the end of the process, b) heat transfer with the surroundings. for: p1.5 mpa and t 240°c: enthalpy of superheated vapour is 2900 kj/kg, specific volume of superheated vapour is 0. 1483 m/kg, while for t 100°c: enthalpy of saturated liquid water is 419kj/kg, specific volume of saturated liquid water is 0.001043m/kg, enthalpy of saturated vapour is 2676 kj/kg, specific volume of saturated vapour is 1.672 m/kg and pressure is 0.1 mpa.
